Mature And Advanced Direct Reduced Iron Technology (DRI) And Sponge Iron Technology

      

Direct reduction technology is applied in the production of sponge iron (DRI), pig iron and cold briquetted iron (CBI).


Ironmaking technology includes the following three processes:

1. The first generation of melting reduction process, i.e. blast furnace ironmaking process, its product is pig iron.

2. The second generation of direct reduction technology, it covers shaft furnace ironmaking process, tunnel kiln ironmaking process, mesh belt furnace ironmaking process and rotary kiln ironmaking process, its product is sponge iron, the feature of product is low carbon content and low density, after being pressed into briquettes, the sponge iron can directly be used for steelmaking by induction furnace or arc furnace, its production raw material is high grade of iron ore or iron concentrate;

3. The third generation of direct reduction combined with melting-separation technology, it includes rotary hearth furnace process and non-crucible reduction kiln process, its product is granular iron ( pig iron ), the feature of product is good quality, high grade, high carbon content and big density, the granular iron is used for steelmaking by arc furnace or casting, its production raw material is all kinds of high grade or low grade of iron ore or iron concentrate, dust from arc furnace, alumina red mud, water quenching copper slag and pyrite cinder, etc. Rotary hearth furnace process with direct reduction technology also can be used in smelting 0f ferronickel, ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferroboron and ferrotitanium, to produce good quality of ferroalloy. Rotary hearth furnace has the advantages of less investment, small covering area, energy-saving, high automation degree and low production cost, it is the development direction of ironmaking industry.
